Why Hollywood sucks?

Well, actually Hollywood movies, but it is pretty much the same.

So, lately you might have realised that hollywood movies are getting worse and worse, but worse how? Technically? no, no way, quite the opposite, the technology is best ever nowadays, even though we might discuss if CGI is usually badly used and else, but leaving that aside, the problem lies on the content itself.

I would say that one of the last few movies that were worth in hollywood were The Lord of the Rings, actually because of Tolkien's amazing story. And you would think about the Hobbit, but well, let's face the facts: Guillermo del Toro scripted for two movies, and they ended up doing three, with a book that is smaller than any of the three of TLOTR, so yeah pretty simple maths. Specially on the first movie it is quite noticeable how they did not know what to put in the movie.

After that, yes, there were some good movies, movies like Wes Anderson's which now are being more valued than before (for some reason, even though some of his older movies are way better), or Iñarritu's movies that were always great. But he didn't come from hollywood, and his first movies did mark his style.

So let's use a something from someone we already named, Guillermo del Toro, he stated a few years ago that he only did movies like Pacific Rim or Hellboy because of that is what the hollywood industry demands of him, but what he really likes doing is movies like El Laberinto del Fauno, Cronos, or El Espinazo del Diablo, which are master pieces. That is why he took a little break, for working on his last movie Crimson Peak.

This leaves us with a little idea of what's going on. We see nowadays a bunch of nonsense stuff going to the big screens. Take for example Jurassic World, which is basically a movie which is just a copy of the first one, but on a different time. But the mould is basically the same. And the story is just rubbish, nothing really new, nothing interesting. Just a bunch of stunning images, some action and a love story.

Other movies like Transformers and most of the Marvel movies are showing to be garbage, not even caring about using the stereotypical phrases that are even kitsch. Or a story which you know perfectly how is going to end just with having seeing the trailer. That same goes for the romantic or comedy movies, or pretty much every gender. Even though this movies do gather a lot of money, they are getting worse and worse.

Though there's something good which seems to be starting to happen through the whole world. There are more and more quality movies in a lot of different places, which, hopefully, will take hollywood down and the art will reign again over the industry and the economic interests of a few.

If you want to look to a quality movie (besides of those named by del Toro, Iñarritu or Anderson) I recommend this one - ノルウェイの森 Noruwei no mori (Norwegian woods / Tokyo blues) directed by Tran Anh Hung, based on the homonymous book by 村上 春樹 (Haruki Murakami). As well as all the movies by Tran Anh Hung.
